Your chart
This is the example. With JavaScript on, the chart follows your words.
39 stitches by 13 rows, about 9.8 × 2.8 in (24.8 × 7.1 cm)
- Navy 73 stitches
- Cream 434 stitches
These rounds are the letters' part of each round. Around a hat or a bag, work the rest of each round in the background color, carrying the letter yarn. Letters lean a little in rounds, so check on a swatch first.

Our two alphabets
Every letter here is our own, drawn for crochet. The small letters are 7 rows tall with strokes one stitch wide. The big ones are 9 rows tall with strokes two stitches wide, so they read from across a room. Each square is one stitch: you can chart a word by hand from them, with 2 stitches between letters.
How to read the chart
Each square is one stitch, drawn as wide as your stitches come out, so the chart looks like your piece. Start at Row 1, the bottom row, on the side its number is on. Worked flat, you turn at the end of each row, so the rows go back and forth; in the round, every round goes the same way. The written rows say the same in words: each color and how many stitches of it, in the order you work them.

Questions
Why do my letters lean in the round?
The top of each single crochet sits a little to one side of its base. Worked flat, the rows go back and forth, so the shifts cancel out. In rounds that all go one way, they add up, and the letters lean. Working in the back loop, or wrapping the yarn under the hook, can reduce it; try it on a swatch first.
Left-handed: do the letters change?
No. The chart shows the right side of your piece, and the letters read the same whoever crochets them. What changes is where each row starts: left-handed, Row 1 starts at the left edge, and in the round every round goes from left to right. Choose Left-handed, and the row numbers and the written rows follow.
How do I carry the yarn behind the letters?
In tapestry crochet, the yarn you are not using rides inside the stitches: lay it along the top of the row and crochet over it, so it stays hidden in the fabric. Across a long stretch of background, keep the carried yarn loose, so the fabric does not pull in.
How big will my letters be?
With our gauge, 16 stitches and 18.5 rows in 4 inches, a small letter (7 rows) is about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) tall and a big one (9 rows) about 1.9 inches (4.9 cm). Your stitches may be bigger or smaller: crochet a swatch, carrying your yarns, and put your numbers into "Use my own gauge".
Can I use lowercase or other letters?
Lowercase letters come out as capitals. The letters are A to Z, 0 to 9 and & ! ? ' - . for now; any other character is left out, and the page says which. To add one, draw it onto the chart by hand: each square is one stitch.
